A Short Review - Dragon Ball GT Episode 01

Goku confronts Pilaf and gang in the heavenly realm.

The Mysterious Dragon Balls Appear!! Goku Becomes a Child?!

I've seen this episode many times, despite not having seen the entirety of DBGT. I've wanted to start watching the series, but life always gets in the way.

It's a great start. The episode is animated very well and the new character designs look great. The story is interesting - bringing back characters we haven't seen in a role since Dragon Ball. I don't love the concept of introducing new dragon balls, though. It makes the original ones feel less special.

Turning Goku back into a kid is also a neat concept, but it's a bummer knowing that this is basically how he'll be for the remainder of GT. Watching an older Goku basically graduate his student and deal with old nemesies is a treat in the first half of the episode. Giving us more of that would have been ideal.

The mood and atmosphere of DBGT also feel so incredibly different than DBZ. It's night and day when you start GT right after Z. Colors and music are much more muted and melancholy.
